Chasing Mavericks – review

"If Jesus were a surfer" seems to have been the pitch for this fabulously earnest real-life tale of a cherubic Santa Cruz wave-rider called Jay.
The opening scene shows him saving a puppy; his teen years are spent stoically missing his absent dad, caring for his flaky mum (Elisabeth Shue, making alcoholism look good) and putting an emotional hairdryer to the icy heart of Frosty (Gerard Butler), their irrationally angry neighbour. "I don't believe in miracles," grizzles Butler early on, and while the religious undertones are largely drowned out by the endless spumy slo-mo and board porn, there's only one way this current is flowing: towards church.
